This course is for workers who are not electricians or electrical engineers but who may use electrical appliances, or work near electrical equipment, cables, switchboards, powerlines, or use portable tools as part of their job. It aims to give them the knowledge and skills to embed safe behaviours, recognise electrical hazards and the associated controls to prevent electrical incidents or to report the hazard to their supervisor.

The course content includes:

• Sources of electricity
• Legal responsibilities regarding the management of the electrical hazard including no-electrical worker responsibilities
• The implications if things go wrong including the various effects of electric current on human beings
• What can go wrong with electrical system
• How effective safety switches are and how to recognise them
• Testing and tagging requirements
• What types of power tools are best
• The things that can go wrong with electrical installations and equipment
• What to do before entering ceiling spaces
• Water and electricity implications
• Electrics on construction sites
• Lock out/tag out of electrical equipment for non-electrical workers
• Electrical leads and electrical safety
• Misuse of electrical equipment
• Electrical safety when drilling, cutting, coring, screwing, etc. into slabs, walls and ceilings
• Welding
• The importance of not doing your own electrical work
• Work near overhead and underground power
• Safety for plumbers working on metallic pipes
• Issues when lightning storms are local
• What to do in an electrical emergency including if a car hits a powerpole, if someone is unresponsive following an electric shock, or if someone has been struck by lightning.

Trainees must attain at least 80% in every assessment to pass the course. You have 31 days to complete this course once enrolled but this can be extended up to 12 months from the date of enrolment.
