Pineapple Farm Worker Electrocuted

Cody Smith, 25, was electrocuted and six other people received an electric shock, and were hospitalised, after a harvester struck powerlines at the Lake Mary Pines farm at Bungundarra, approximately 15 kilometres northwest of Yeppoon. The incident occurred at about 9:30am on 14th July 2021.

It is alleged that a stay wire on a power pole was broken, which lowered live conductors below legal heights. This allowed Mr Smith’s harvester to hit them, killing him and injuring the six others. Mr Smith was still inside the harvester but was unable to be revived by emergence crews. The Electrical Trades Union has suggested that Ergon Energy was to blame and should be charged.

The accident, which is under investigation by QLD Workplace Health and Safety Department and the QLD Electrical Safety Office, is the second associated with the farm in just over five years. A co-owner had been successfully prosecuted in 2018, and fined $20,000, for the previous breach.

Tributes have poured in over social media for the keen fisherman from friends and family.
