Electrical Incidents and Prosecutions (Dec 24 to Jan 25)

The following electrical incidents and prosecutions are but a sample of those occurring across Australia and beyond that we have been made aware of since our last newsletter.
Employers and workers are encouraged to ensure all legal requirements and controls are in place when carrying out work to prevent heartache, loss of production, fines, imprisonment, etc. Our sympathies go out to those that have lost loved ones.

Electrical Incidents and Near Misses
NSW – 29 year old, father of two, electrocuted in the roof cavity of a home while helping a mate.

NSW – Boilermaker received an electric shock when welding a handrail while leaning on the bench and touched handpiece.

NSW – Mine worker received an electric shock when he touched a sieve shaker that had been affected by water.

NSW – Electrician received a 240 volt shock due to a second control circuit source of supply in a switchroom had not been isolated.

NSW – Surface of a underground mine: skid pump battery exploded during starting due to an internal battery fault.

QLD – Earlier in 2024, an electrical worker electrocuted while upgrading a split air condition located on a commercial building’s metal roof.

QLD – Scissor lift at approx. 8 metres fell over with a worker suffering fatal head injuries. The lift was undergoing retrieval maintenance by a technician when it toppled.

USA – Electrician, outside his ute died when struck by a LHD loader.

Prosecutions and Inquests

QLD – Disciplinary Action Nov 2024 – 16 actions taken.

SA – Electrical company fined $300,000 following the death of a worker.

WA – Bathroom renovator fine for illegal electrical work after a homeowner pulled on a dangling live wire.
